#StoryCraft Challenge – Antagonists

Today’s topic was: the Forces of Antagonism i.e., all those things which combine to keep your protagonist from their goal (thus creating your story!)  We discussed villains who believe they are doing the right thing (as almost everybody does), cultural demands which impose upon the desires of our characters, psychological blocks and all the many things which can be forces of antagonism.  Today’s challenge is, of course, all about antagonists.

Challenge: Re-write a scene from your WIP (or write a new scene, if you like) in which an antagonist acts against the protagonist, from the antagonist’s point of view. Make it 1st person or 3rd person intimate so that you can get right inside the antagonist and we can understand all their motivations – you may learn something new about them yourself! Remember, no-one does anything without believing they have a legitimate reason for doing it – even laziness is a choice.

Wordcount: up to 500wds

Deadline: Any time before next #storycraft chat (GMT 11PM Sunday, US Pacific 3PM Sunday, Aust. Eastern 8am Monday).

How to Submit:

Either: post it on your own blog and send a link to @Story_Craft: or email the link tostorycraft@narrativedisorder.com

OR: simply send the piece in the text of an email to storycraft@narrativedisorder.com

As always, pieces will be posted as I receive them. If you feel you want to declare your intentions to do the challenge so that you have a little more incentive, feel free to do so in the comments!

Happy Writing!

Note for the politically or violently inclined writer: There is no age requirement for this site so please be aware of that. This doesn’t mean that pieces need to be PG, but simply that I won’t be posting anything which glorifies sexual violence or incites hatred toward any particular group or person (which is different from addressing those issues, of course).
